Walk on glass - Frequently asked questions
Some smaller sized projects may be able to use thinner panes commonly 31.5mm or 25.5mm. These are made from 2 glass layers and a single interlayer reducing the level of ‘safety net’ performance provided by the second interlayer. There are some cost savings as there are fewer parts and less processes involved making 2 ply panels instead of 3 ply but for the correct applications these specifications are perfectly fine.
The exact answer to this question can be a little technical. All walk on glass should be made using a combination of glass layers laminated together ensuring that should one or more of the layers break and fail the remaining layer is still strong enough to keep a person safe and prevent them from falling through the opening. Any combination of glass thicknesses and types could work providing they meet the necessary calculations. These all depend on the opening sizes and how the edges are supported. Every panel has an allowable deflection rate and alongside the glass calculations the supporting structure needs to offer sufficient rigidity and stiffness levels in order to comply.
As standard we apply a painted border to the underside of the top glass layer in our walk on glass panels. This border hides the frame and sealing gasket from view when looking at the glass from above ensuring a clean and tidy appearance. As all of our systems are designed and fabricated to order these borders can be to any size or specification needed to compliment the project. Although the vast majority of customers opt for a black border we can offer any RAL colour if desired. Due to the iron content all standard glass has a slight green tint which is unnoticeable for dark colours but can alter the appearance if lighter colours are used. Lighter shades still work but are hard to colour match due to this effect.
Yes they can but over the years our customers have almost exclusively chosen painted. Due to the slightly textured nature of etched or sandblasted borders they can be prone to scuffing and marking. They do offer a small degree of anti-slip around the edge but due to the durability and appearance of the painted version they are rarely used
We can provide a bespoke custom built steel support frame with all of our walk on products. For panels sitting on masonry or concrete supporting structures we always recommend using a support frame. This ensures that the glass has a smooth, flat and stiff surface to mount on. Because the glass sits inside the frame the metal sides both protect the edges and provide a solid surface to cement, tile or fit the final floor finishes up to. If the walk on glass panel is being fitted into a wooden frame such as between floor joists or into a staircase then often the woodwork can be made suitable to accept the glass panel and a steel frame is not required. Providing the ledge is of the correct size and is perfectly flat the glass can fit straight in. The ledge must be strong enough and fixed securely to make sure that the structure can carry both the weight of the glass including all load weights. We are happy to provide a glass only service to customers wishing to produce their own frames and will offer advice and information as to the required specifications.
Usually our frames are professionally made using 6mm gauge mild steel either in the form of angle section or sheets ready for further fabrication. We work closely with a local master fabricator with many decades of experience and knowledge ensuring CAD accuracy and the highest level of quality. Steel frames are then powder coated to the desired colour. Again this is usually black but any colour can be chosen if desired. Other materials are available on request including stainless steel or even brass.
In a word, no. Mass produced, bulk quality products have never been our thing. Every system we design is given a comprehensive assessment and a bespoke frame is designed on CAD software to exactly meet the needs of our customers. Each component has it’s tolerances calculated and is produced to CNC accuracy as a single project.
Although the vast majority of our work is rectangular or circular we can produce the glass and frame, if required, to almost any shape. Rectangular frames are obviously more basic in design being made from an appropriate angle profile. Shaped frames are usually CNC plasma cut from steel and then upstands are added providing a housing for the glass. We offer a digital scanning service so drawings can be made from templates or during site visits. Every system is designed on CAD ensuring a perfect fit and an exacting finished product.
By it’s nature glass or any smooth surface can be slippery when wet. For most applications this is not an issue but for high traffic areas or on emergency escape routes anti-slip performance may be required. We use a 10mm textured glass product to replace the standard clear top layer. This provides a high friction, anti slip surface that performs well and meets the strictest tests. This textured surface has the added benefit of obscuring the panel. This opaque, privacy layer allows light to flood through the glass whilst preventing view.
